Micro Business Owners Expect 50% Electricity Discount Extension
Micro Business Owners Expect 50% Electricity Discount Extension
PLN’s 50% electricity discount program benefits micro businesses, but they hope it will be extended to support post-pandemic economic recovery.
The 50% electricity discount program provided by PLN has had a positive impact on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia. One of the micro business owners, Mr. Hendra, who runs a small business on Jalan Ogan, Palembang, stated that this program helps reduce his operational costs. He acknowledged that this initiative was one of President Prabowo’s campaign promises.
Mr. Hendra emphasized that the discount significantly affects his electricity expenses. However, he is uncertain about the program’s duration and hopes it will last longer than one month. "Too much impact, but I don't know how long this program will continue. I think one month is not enough. Everyone knows we just got hit by COVID-19," he said. He also pointed out that the pandemic’s effects are still being felt by businesses, both large and small. "Many big companies have collapsed. You can see companies like 'Giant,' right? Giant is also a big company that had to cut workers due to the impact of COVID-19," he explained. He believes that stimulus programs like this are essential for small business owners.

Before the 50% discount, Mr. Hendra found electricity costs to be excessively high. "Before this, we had to pay expensive electricity bills. Now, there is a discount, but it is still not enough for us because we are on the front line of the economy," he stated. He emphasized that the pandemic did not only affect large corporations but also put a strain on micro businesses.
Mr. Hendra fully supports extending this discount program. "Absolutely yes," he said. "I think this program should be extended for at least six months to a year because it can stimulate the economy in Indonesia, and people can also get jobs from small business owners," he added.
PLN’s 50% electricity discount program has provided real benefits for micro business owners like Mr. Hendra. However, to support post-pandemic economic recovery, an extension of this program is highly anticipated. Extending this initiative is expected to help MSMEs survive, grow, and create job opportunities for the community.
